English makers Merrifield

George Merrifield worked from about 1819 till his dead in 1855. He is maybe the best turner of his time. His chess sets are outstanding in precision and beauty. As far as I know are all "Merrifield" sets actually made by George Merrifield and not by other manufacturers.

The sets are recognisable by the King and Queen finials as in the 1st set, although traditional St.George sets do exist as well as seen in the 2nd pegged travel set. Further by the beautiful Knights and the unique characteristic lower disc of the major pieces (except rook). Not necessarily all of them - in the 1st set it is not on the Knights and in 2nd pegged travel set it is omitted.
