The barleycorn grain motive is a popular decoration in 1st half of 19th century in United Kingdom. Chess sets with that decoration were called "Barleycorn". However the term is now also used for sets of similar shape which have other decorations or even are undecorated. Note that I treat "Ropetwist" sets separately.
